Birds in Eswatini
Eswatini is a small country located in Southern Africa, bordered by South Africa and Mozambique. The country is home to a variety of bird species, including both resident and migratory birds.
In Eswatini, 500 bird species have been identified (Swaziland). This compares to France (517) or, more locally, the Kruger National Park (505), which is an impressive result for such a small, landlocked country. According to the Southern African Birdfinder, the nation is home to 21% of the 150 most sought-after Southern African species. These enormous numbers are due to the diversity of habitats, with numerous quite diverse bird groups coexisting.
Migratory birds have joined the local birds from November to April, and the quantity of birds in the nation is astounding. This is the time of year when birders in Swaziland see a large number of birds.
The lowveld has the most species, with Hlane or Mlawula easily delivering up to 100 species in a day to a dedicated birder - especially during the summer, when all the migrants are there. The Hlane Royal National Park also has the largest population of nesting white back vultures in Africa. The highveld features fewer species but numerous rarities that are more difficult to find elsewhere. Malolotja is a popular birding site in southern Africa.
